  MAGNETIC FLUX EMERGENCE IN THE QUIET SUN: THE PATHWAY TO THE TRANSITION REGION

Magnetic flux emergence occurs all over the quiet Sun down to the smallest observable scales. A fraction of the flux emerging in the photosphere rises through the chromosphere into the transition region, carrying flux and magnetic energy upwards. The details of this process are not well known because of the very weak signals of quiet Sun magnetic elements, but high-sensitivity, high-resolution observations from the ground and space are starting to reveal how and when the emerging flux interact with the ambient fields on its way to the corona.
